Duke’s run being ranked #1 is over about as quick as it started. Wake Forest scored with .8 seconds left Wednesday night to upset Duke 70-68 on their home court. Duke was down 11 points with under 10 minutes to go and battled back to tie the game on a Gerald Henderson jumpshot but Wake Forest ended up getting the last shot of the game on an inbounds play at their baseline to win. It was a tough game for the Blue Devils and I do have to give them credit for coming back in the game.
Wake Forest is the type of team that has given Duke problems in the past. The Deamon Deacons are a very tall team and very athletics. They presented Duke matchup problems all night long. The fact that no else showed besides Henderson and Kyle Singler also hurt the Blue Devils but I will give Wake their credit as they played their game and held on for the victory.
Henderson and Singler did their best to bring the Blue Devils back late in the game but when the rest of the team scored under 10 points in the second half, you almost knew it wasn’t meant to be. Singler led the Blue Devils with 23 points while Henderson added 21 of his own. The only other player in double figures was Jon Scheyer with 13 but he only shot 2-of-10 from the field as he continues to struggle shooting the ball.
I’m very dissappointed in how Brian Zoubek played tonight. Tonight was his chance to shine against the bigger Wake Forest team. Zoubek was alwasy getting out rebounded and went scoreless while only playing 13 minutes. Coack K knew right away that Zoubek wasn’t the answer down low and elected to go with the smaller lineup much of the second half.
Speaking of Coack K, did he look tired or what? I don’t know if he was feeling sick or not but it really looked like he could use a few days of rest. Coach might need an IV before the next game. He clearly wasn’t himself tonight I don’t think.
It’s not the end of the world for the Blue Devils even though they lost. They are still in the hunt for the ACC Championship. They will get Wake Forest at home later in the season as well so a little payback might be coming for the Deamon Deacons. Let’s all keep our heads up high.
