For the first time since 1996, the Duke Basketball team will not be playing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Virgina Commonwealth upset the Blue Devils tonight 79-77 in a hard fought battle.Â
VCU came into the game wanting to put pressure on the Devils and that is what they did for all 40 minutes of the game. Duke handles it for the most part but you could tell that the guards were getting very tired in the second half due to the pressure. Shots were falling shorts, and just tournovers kept happening.
Greg Paulus had a career high 25 points, and Josh McRoberts came to play tonight but I have to question where DeMarcus Nelson and Jon Scheyer were. Scheyer was constantly open and could never get a decent shot off. Nelson got in early foul trouble and didn’t provide much help on the offensive side of the ball.
I’ll give VCU credit as they deserve it without a question. They got the stops on defense that they needed and hit the shot at the end of the game.Â
Tough break for the Blue Devils tonight. It is going to be a very long off-season for Duke and the Blue Devil fans like myself.
