Duke hammers Maryland 85-44

The Duke Blue Devils played the most complete game they have all year as they hammered the Maryland Terrapins 85-44 on Saturday afternoon. The 41 point loss for the Terrapins was their worst loss under coach Gary Williams. With the victory, Duke will become the new #1 when the polls are released on Monday as Wake Forest lost earlier in the week.

Duke was pretty much on fire the entire game. As a team they shot 42% from the floor and 48% from three point land. The one part of the game that they didn’t do to well was at the free throw line where they only shot 58%. Gerald Henderson was the high scorer for the team as he finished with 17 points. Jon Scheyer nailed four three pointers to finish with 12 points while Kyle Singler added 11 points as well.

I was surprised with how well Brian Zoubek played. Zoubek recorded nine points and also grabbed nine boards today against the Terrapins. He has gotten a lot better as the season as went on and it is really helping out the team at both ends of the court. Another guy that had a good game was freshman Elliot Williams who had nine points as well.

So Duke will become the #1 ranked team in the country on Monday more then likely. The Blue Devils haven’t been ranked number 1 since the final poll of the 2005-06 season. Th Blue Devils will be taking on Wake Forest Wednesday night so their first game as number 1 is going to be a very tough game. Duke will have to shoot the ball well and also rebound well to beat the Deamon Decons on their home court but the way the Blue Devls are playing, I think they will get the job done.

Coach K was off his rocker@ last weeks press conference!! The ACC & Big East both have the same number of teams in the top five but, the Beast has one more in the top ten than the ACC. So, not only are they better at the bottom of the poll where the Big East is holding 4 spots from 8-25, they’re one team better at the top as well. Granted that’s from the ESPN/USA Today poll (AP yet to be released) but, to quote my Algebra Professor ” numbers don’t lie. I mean think about it, a team like Duke is gonna (should) roll over teams like Maryland & Florida State in the middle of the ACC. Mean while Uof L is going up against the likes of G-Town& Notre Dame. When you get to the guys at the very bottom of both conferences the disparity is even worse! Case in point; NC. St, Georgia& Virginia Tech are 2-14 in the ACC & 26-26 over all. Meanwhile, the same 10, 11,& 12 spots in the Beast (ND,UC& St. Johns) are 8-13 in conference but, 36-21 over all. Like I said, numbers don’t lie. I’m not saying the ACC isn’t great but, when you look at it objectively there’s no denying which conference has more top tier teams and, if that’s what you judge a conference on (and I think you should) the Big East is flat out the better/ tougher conference this year. No question, period, point blank, good night Irene, see you in Detroit Baby!!!
