Bailey tells us about being a Duke fan

It’s time for another addition to our “About being a Duke fan” section. This time it is Bailey from Durham giving us her thoughts and opinions on Duke basketball. If aren’t already, make sure you follow this Duke girl on Twitter @baylovesyall

How long have you been a Duke fan and what was the first moment you remember being that die hard Duke fan?

Growing up in Durham, NC, I was born and raised a Duke fan.  I remember wearing Duke shirts to school and getting ugly looks, but always being proud to wear Duke blue. I think that I truly became a die hard Duke fan in the sixth grade, when I watched Coach K lead our team to our 3rd national championship.

Your favorite Duke player of all time and why?

This is probably such a stereotypical girl answer, but I really loved watching JJ Redick for 4 years.  I remember watching his first game at Duke and being so mesmerized.  That boy can shoot!  There have been so many memorable players at Duke, so it’s hard to pick just one!

Your thoughts on the 2010-2011 season as Duke tries to repeat as champions?

First of all, knock on wood!   I knocked on wood throughout the entire tournament last year and the entire time I was in Indy.  I wouldn’t talk about the tournament for the fear of jinxing my boys.  I will just say that I’m so hyped to see Kyrie, Seth, Josh, and Tyler on the court and I’m so happy for our seniors- Nolan, Kyle, and Casey.  As Coach K said, I’m not just hungry for this, I’m starving!!!!!   LET’S GO DUKE!!!  (Knock on wood)

Do your friends and family think you are crazy for being such a Duke fan?

Absolutely.   My family is used to it, and my brother/dad are just as diehard as I am.  My friends at school have gotten used to it too, but random people do yell “Hey Duke girl!” across campus to me.  Also, the people at BW3′s probably hate me, because I start GTHC, GTH (clap, clap) chants ALL the time!  :)

Why are you a Duke fan #1

Hey everyone, hope all is going well for you. Practice is underway for the 2010-2011 season and that means that we will have more updates on the site. I’m trying something new this year as we are asking Duke fans via Twitter some questions. I recommend you sign-up to twitter if you aren’t already and follow not only @justdukecom but also each Duke fan that we highlight.

Let’s get ready with the first who goes by the handle of @JohnnyDukes32

How long have you been a Duke fan and what was the first moment you remember being that die hard Duke fan?

I have been a Duke fan ever since the Laettner days. Of course the moment I became a die-hard was “the shot”. I can still remember being bummed on the couch as Duke was down, then Laettner hit that shot and I literally launched myself over my couch and ran through the house with my arms raised screaming and yelling. The rest is history into my biggest passion.

Your favorite Duke player of all time and why?

Christian Laettner. As stated before he is what started my Duke passion. There was a certain calm arrogance to him. He never lost his cool no matter the situation. He was someone who always wanted the ball in his hands with the game on the line and always seemed to come up with the shot that dashed some teams dreams.

Your thoughts on the 2010-2011 season as Duke tries to repeat as champions?

From what I saw at Countdown To Craziness I think this team is the most talented Duke team I’ve seen in years. They have everything it takes to become Champions again. They have size, speed, depth and are very athletic. Kyrie Irving even though a freshman, will make everyone else on the court that much better. He has excellent vision, the ability to pass and drive to the hoop. A very dangerous player that will cause all kinds of problems for opposing teams. I think the biggest question for this year’s team, if any, is their inside presence. If the Plumlee brother’s continue to progress the way they have been and Mason has a breakout season, I believe they will be raising banner number 5 come April.

Do your friends and family think you are crazy for being such a Duke fan?

Haha good question, of course there are some of my friends that are the Duke haters and think my passion goes overboard. But for the most part I have turned my friends and family into big time Duke fans through my passion. Every year my family and friends make it to a couple games with me. So in a way for 5 months I get to be much closer with my friends and family. Also I made a few good friends over the years through our passion for Duke. Always a good time during basketball season!
