DeMarcus Nelson leads Duke past Georgia Southern 72-48

Junior guard DeMarcus Nelson lifted the Dukies to a 73-48 win tonight over a scrappy Georgian Southern team.  It was Nelson who kept Duke in the game in first half as Duke trailed most of the half to a Georgian Southern team that was hitting threes and getting a lot of calls going their way.  Nelson sparked the team with his three pointer right before halftime.  Nelson finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Josh McRoberts added 16 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots while Gerald Henderson had 13 points and a pair of steals.  Jon Scheyer chipped in 11 points, four boards and four assists.

Duke (2-0) advances to the semifinals of the CBE Classic and will meet the winner of the Palo Alto Regional (Stanford vs. San Jose State; Air Force vs. Long Beach State) on Monday, November 20 at 7 p.m. (ESPN 2) in Kansas City, Mo.

Up next for the Blue Devils is UNC Greensboro on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

JJ Redick to be activated today?

SG J.J. Redick likely will dress for his second game of the season when the Orlando Magic face the Celtics on Monday night in Boston. Coach Brian Hill said he plans to activate Redick and deactivate PG Travis Diener. Diener was activated for Saturday night’s game in Minneapolis against the Timberwolves after the Magic decided to rest veteran SG Grant Hill. Hill will return against the Celtics. Diener gave the Magic three point guards on their 12-man roster, although Brian Hill said he was confident Diener “can play both positions” and also provide depth at shooting guard. Redick, the club’s first-round draft pick out of Duke, dressed for the Magic’s second game of the season against the Philadelphia 76ers but did not see action. Limited during training camp and early in the preseason by injuries, Redick — who finished second in Division I scoring behind Adam Morrison — went scoreless in two exhibition games (0-for-3).

Duke crushes Columbia 86-43

It was an opening night win for the Duke Blue Devils as they were lead by the surging freshman against Columbia last night.  Brian Zoubek lead the way with 18 points with 10 of those points coming from the charity line.  Jon Scheyer played a great game and looks like he is a great three point shooter, Scheyer finished with 12 points which all came in the first half.  Watching Lance Thomas you just cannot get excited! Lance plays with such emotion and hustles after everything, he is a great player for the Dukies.  One thing that I did notice with Gerald Henderson was he liked to rush alot of shot when he should have gave the ball up.  This was his first game, I’m sure his nerves were through the roof and he wanted to look good, but he was really pressing himself.  Hopefully Coach K and the assitance and get him to control that.

It was nice to see Greg Paulus back out on the court, in his 19 minutes of play, Paulus had 7 assists while dishing out the rock to everyone on the team.  He will play in the 20 minutes a game range for a week or so I would think and then move into the 25-30 min area.

Josh McRoberts is the team leader for sure, he is telling people where to go and what to do.  He can finish whenever he wants but last night he was getting the freshman going in the game.

Tonight Duke plays Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. eastern time.  The game will be televised on ESPN2 so make sure to watch!

Greg Paulus questionable for season opener

Sophomore point guard Greg Paulus is being reported as questionable for the season opener on Sunday night.  Paulus has not practiced with the team since late October due to his injured foot.  Coack K did say that Paulus would practice a little bit the next few days and they would see how the food responded before making an official annoucement.

If Paulus is not ready to go, Freshman Jon Scheyer will get his first regular season start for the Blue Devils.  To be honest, I don’t think it matters who starts or plays at point guard on Sunday night.   The Blue Devils are going to roll to an opening round win in the CBE Classic.

Not as many Cameron Crazies this year?

Cameron CraziesDurham’s fire marshall is playing a role in how many Cameron Crazies are allowed into the building and how close they will be sitting to the court starting this year.  In years past, undergraduate students could sit directly behind press row just a few feet from the court, but now they will be pushed back one row.

The older wooden bleachers that most fans have never seen since the Crazies stand all game, have been replaced by metal risers.

The Duke fans and Coack K aren’t happy about the changes as Coach K feels the students are part of the team and should be as close to the court as possible.  We can still expect Cameron Indoor Stadium to be rocking and the Dukies winning like always!

Josh McRoberts named first team All-American by Fox Sports

Josh McRoberts keeps on grabbing pre-season awards.  This time McRoberts was named to the First Team All-American Team by Fox Sports.

Here is what Fox Sports had to say about McRoberts:

PF — Josh McRoberts, 6-10, 240, Soph., Duke — If his back holds up, McRoberts could be the best big man in the country. He is extremely versatile and will be asked to carry the load for the Blue Devils.

Duke beats Shaw 96-45

Freshman guard Jon Scheyer lead the Blue Devils against Shaw tonight as Duke won 96-45.  Scheyer playing point guard finised with 19 points.

Junior DeMarcus Nelson tossed in 13 points while freshman Lance Thomas and sophomore Martynas Pocius added 12 points each.  Sophomore Josh McRoberts made five-of-six field goal attempts en route to scoring 11 points to go along with his eight rebounds, six assists, four steals and one blocked shot in 25 minutes of action.  Freshman Brian Zoubek contributed nine points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.

I was expecting a bigger game from Zoubek has he had a big height advantage over all of the Shaw players.  I like his 11 rebounds he will be called on to grab the board all year long.

The next game for Duke will be Saturday night against North Carolina Central.  The game will begin at 7 p.m. eastern time.  If you are still looking for Duke Tickets click here and view our inventory!
